    “Amazing Time at Marataba”

The main reason we wanted to go to South Africa was for the game drives. We booked our trip through Costco Travel, who uses Lion World Travel for the South Africa vacation packages.

Our travel agent booked our flight based on the summer schedule, which made us late for the afternoon game drive when we arrived. The staff at Marataba apologized, when it wasn’t their fault, and offered us a glass of wine and escorted us to our room while we waited for the groups to return.

The room was fantastic and just as described. It was pretty cool to come out of the room and see warthogs roaming around. Of course, once they saw us, they scattered, but not before we were able to snap a couple photos.

The food was all so good! They asked when we arrived if we had any food allergies and lucky for us, we don’t. While there were a couple options for each meal, everything we ate was delicious. The day started early with morning coffee/tea, muffins or pastries, and fruit before the morning game drive. Breakfast was served after the first game drives around 10 AM and started with a cheese and parfait plate followed by your breakfast choice. Lunch was anytime between 12:30 PM and 2ish (?) and included a soup, lunch choice, and dessert. High tea was before the afternoon drive around 3:30PM and included tea, coffee, cake and finger foods. Dinner was served after the afternoon drive around 7:30. There were a couple times we shared a meal because we were so full from the last one.

The staff was very attentive and was available whether it was to walk us to our tent when it was dark or answer any questions. Our guide, Roxanne, was very knowledgeable about the animals, terrain, tracks, etc. She would ask us if there was anything particular we wanted to see and do her best to locate those animals. We saw herds of elephants, rhinos, hippos, lionesses and their cubs, kudu, eland, monkeys, baboons, and of course, impala. The only animal we didn’t see that we would have liked to were the male lions, which our group saw the evening drive we missed.

We contacted our travel agent to make sure our pickup time was correct for departure and mentioned that we were pretty upset we missed the first game drive. They contacted Marataba and asked that they take care of us, which they were already doing and I have no doubt they would have anyway.
