    “Best bush experience ever”

We stayed 4 nights at the Nkelenga tented camp, part of the Thornybush collection of game lodges in the Thornybush private game reserve.
This camp is for self-catering with a main house with one bedroom sleeping two and a loft with 4 beds, ideally suited for children and a very well equipped kitchen. In addition, there are 3 en-suite airconditioned tents for 2 persons each. A ranger, tracker and game vehicle accommodating 9 people are at your disposal. The accommodation is serviced, all you have to bring is food and drinks and do the cooking. Wood for fire is provided.
The location is superb, we had wonderful game sightings, including 2 cheetah and 2 leopard kills. One cheetah kill was right outside the fence of the camp. We were busy having lunch, when suddenly a cheetah pounced on an impala and killed it right in front of us!
This camp is highly recommended, it is a cheaper option to the “full board” main lodge.

“Thornybush and the Big 5 - the 'private camp' option.”

We’ve just returned from Thornybush and were lucky to get one of the private camps situated within the reserve. We had the main house (sleeps up to 6) and three tented rooms, each with its own en-suite shower room, and sitting on timber decks. My tented room was very comfortable and had A/C, which is a must in those hot afternoons between game drives. We were a large group of 8 so we were afforded our own privacy, and we could do what we wanted. We had our own dedicated vehicle, tracker and guide (Cedric and ‘Shoes’, who were outstanding), plus a maid who looked after us every day. This is a self-catering option, so we made good use of the fire-pit and braai every night. The twice-daily game drives were a minimum of 3 hours each, and we were extremely lucky to see the big 5, cheetah and wild dog as well as the ubiquitous ‘nabi’ – “not another bloody impala..’. Morning coffees and snacks, as well as the evening sundowners were much appreciated. It’s worth your while looking at the more secluded’ private camp’ option if you have the numbers – you are well away from the main lodge and completely at one with the surrounding bush. There’s nothing better than sitting around a blazing fire, under clear, starry African skies, or drifting off to sleep to the sounds of lion and hyena. Amazing.

    “Always wonderful, never disappoints!”

We stayed at Waterside for one night and Nkelenga for two nights recently and I can honestly say it was heaven. Waterside is a more traditional hotel bush experience in that you stay in rooms and your food is catered – Nkelenga is a self-catering tented camp that you hire in its entirety. Two very different experiences but both equally wonderful.

Our rangers (Jordan and Shoes) and trackers (Richard and Cedric) went out of their way to make sure that we saw the animals we had on our wish lists (not that you can ever guarantee what the bush is willing to show you!) and were incredibly informative and entertaining.

At Waterside, we stayed in Room 16, which was very comfortable and spacious. We had dinner in the blue boma on Friday night – delicious food and a wonderful wine list made for a long, increasingly raucous, dinner under the stars.

Shoes and Cedric made our stay at Nkelenga even more special – wonderful men who are passionate and knowledgeable about the bush. For a group of friends, Nkelenga is the perfect getaway spot – the main house sleeps two in the bedroom and three in the loft (ideal for teenagers) and then the three tents sleep a total of six people. Margaret, the housekeeper, makes sure that everything is pristine by the time you come back from your morning game drive and you’re left to your own devices (lazing under the trees in the garden watching any animals that come to the dam, snoozing, watching sport on the telly, swimming in the pool, napping on the couch on the veranda) for the rest of the day until it’s time for the evening game drive. The perfect weekend!

“Nkelenga Tented Camp - satellite camp of Thornybush Game Lodge”

This was the 5th time we stayed at this self-catering camp. Again it was a fabulous experience. We stayed for 5 days and enjoyed every day.
Since the fence was pulled down between Timbavati and Thornybush game reserves, there is certainly more game activity. It is the first time we saw wild dogs in this reserve!
We also saw black rhino on two occasions.
On every game drive we saw leopards.
The camp itself is wonderful, ideal for family or group of friends.
