• Exclusive-use Villa Lobengula

Lobengula Lodge is superbly nestled within the valley, and is surrounded by the natural bushveld of the area. Similar to the other Shamwari lodges, it has an attractive thatched roof, and is decorated according to a classical African theme. Part of its elegance is enhanced by the decorative items that have been locally made by women of the nearby village.

This Shamwari lodge is a proudly ‘green’ initiative, supporting local farmers by purchasing their fresh, home-grown and organic fruits and vegetables. Guests can therefore be assured of being served food of only the highest quality. The highly recommendable dishes offered by the lodge can be enjoyed at the boma in the moonlight, on the main deck or in the warmer dining area beside the fireplace.

Great selections of South African wines go well with every meal.
Fantastically African, the Villa Lobengula is designed with a traditional ‘kraal’, where visitors can engage in several holistic therapies for complete rejuvenation. This heavenly sanctuary is surrounded by soul-uplifting views, and also includes a steam room and sauna.

A yoga studio and Tsala meditation deck can be found in the main lodge as well. Guests also have access to a swimming pool, a small library and a fitness room.

Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5. Stretching 25,000 hectares over a malaria-free landscape, it offers an award-winning nature experience and is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.

An expert game ranger accompanies guests on early morning and evening game drives, enlightening visitors about the latest research and conservation programmes at Shamwari. Bird-viewing decks allow for wonderful sightings of the myriad of birds in the reserve.

Also offered are visits to Shamwari’s Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre, the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, and the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. The Centre is amongst the best in Southern Africa and provides veterinary care to young, abandoned, orphaned or injured animals.

Guided game walks provide for a more intimate experience, and offer an opportunity to gain a true perspective of the surrounding fauna and flora.
The five biomes in the reserve enable the support of a huge diversity of plants, animals and bird life. Guests can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, black and white rhino, hippo, kudu, springbok, bushbuck, grey duiker, black wildebeest, gemsbok and zebra. Lucky guests might spot cheetah, brown hyena, wild dog and the elusive leopard. Shamwari Game Reserve opened the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre in 2012 as a place where guests can learn about rhinos and the growing epidemic of rhino poaching in South Africa. The wildlife department is active in maintaining the delicate ecological balance and taking care of the health and safety of the animals.

Shamwari Game Reserve boasts over 250 bird species. Raptor species include Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s river meanders through the reserve providing a great refuge for kingfishers, darters, the African Shelduck, finfoots and the iconic African Fish Eagle.

“"A perfect end to our S.A. holiday"”

We have just spent a memorable three days at Lobengula and would particularly like to thank Ranger Patrick for two of the most enjoyable game drives we have experienced during the past twenty years while staying at eleven different lodges in five African countries. We much appreciated Patrick’s knowledge and good humour, but all the staff at the Lodge deserve a special mention for being so helpful and friendly and the management should be proud of them all.

“2 Night Stay”

We recently paid a second visit to Shamwari – the first being to Long Lee Manor in September 2014. However, on this occasion we spent 2 nights at Lobengula Lodge which gave us a completely different experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The Lodge is lovely and very private. All staff especially Nina went out of their way to be helpful. The food was amazing – content and presentation wise so we would like to thank all the catering staff. As for our ranger Patrick – he was a font of knowledge and went out of his way to help us see as much wildlife as possible – which in the 2 days we did. The Lodge has a lovely relaxed and peaceful atmosphere and we would certainly recommend and hope to be back one day. Thank you, Lobengula Lodge, for a lovely stay. Katherine and Francesco.

“Lobengula Lodge”

Everything about Lobengula Lodge exceeded my expectations. Our villa was lovely, with a large living area, a comfortable bedroom and a bathroom with every amenity. We also had a private patio and plunge pool. The Lodge sitting area, pool and dining areas are comfortably rustic, with lots of African touches. But the best thing about Shamwari is the people, who extend such a warm welcome and especially our wonderful ranger, Sihle, who has amazing knowledge about the animals, birds and the bush. He somehow managed to always find the animals we wanted to see. It was a dream come true. To Nina, Sihle and all the Lobengula staff, thank-you for a wonderful experience. We hope to be back! “Perfect setting for a safari”

Had the most wonderful 2 nights at Shamwari, staying at Lobengula Lodge. Great rooms and meals.
But obviously the highlight was the game drives – our wonderful ranger Sihle went above and beyond to show us all the animals we could find, getting very close and explaining so much.
Amazing experience, would highly recommend.
