  • Shamwari Private Game Reserve
  • Exceptional Big Five Viewing
  • Highly Popular & Excellently Rated

Lobengula Lodge is superbly nestled within the valley, and is surrounded by the natural bushveld of the area. Similar to the other Shamwari lodges, it has an attractive thatched roof, and is decorated according to a classical African theme. Part of its elegance is enhanced by the decorative items that have been locally made by women of the nearby village.

Great selections of South African wines go well with every meal.
Fantastically African, the Lobengula is designed with a traditional ‘kraal’.

Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5. Stretching 25,000 hectares over a malaria-free landscape, it offers an award-winning nature experience and is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.

An expert game ranger accompanies guests on early morning and evening game drives, enlightening visitors about the latest research and conservation programmes at Shamwari. Bird-viewing decks allow for wonderful sightings of the myriad of birds in the reserve.

Also offered are visits to Shamwari’s Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre and the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. The Centre is amongst the best in Southern Africa and provides veterinary care to young, abandoned, orphaned or injured animals.

Guided game walks provide for a more intimate experience, and offer an opportunity to gain a true perspective of the surrounding fauna and flora.
The five biomes in the reserve enable the support of a huge diversity of plants, animals and birdlife. Guests can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, black and white rhino, hippo, kudu, springbok, bushbuck, grey duiker, black wildebeest, gemsbok and zebra. Lucky guests might spot cheetah, brown hyena and the elusive leopard. The wildlife department is active in maintaining the delicate ecological balance and taking care of the health and safety of the animals.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve boasts over 250 bird species. Raptor species include Black Harriers, Pale Chanting Goshawks, Black-shouldered Kites, Booted Eagles and Secretary Birds. The Bushman’s river meanders through the reserve providing a great refuge for kingfishers, darters, the African Shelduck, finfoots and the iconic African Fish Eagle.
