Getting to Kruger National Park by road

FROM JOHANNESBURG
Self driving to the Kruger Park is a feasible option for those on a budget. You could hire a car in Johannesburg and drive to the park via the N4. The park has nine entrance gates, the closest of which are in the south between 420km and 500km from Johannesburg. The drive takes between 3½ and 4½ hours. The road is tarred and well maintained with clean service stations along the way. Fuel is never a problem in South Africa, and easy-to-follow maps are available with all car rentals.

• From Mpumalanga – about 130km;

Getting to Kruger National Park by air

JOHANNESBURG TO YOUR SAFARI LODGE FLIGHTS
Daily flights operate between Johannesburg and many of the private lodges surrounding the Kruger. This is the easiest and most convenient way to travel to the park. The flights take about 90 minutes and deliver you to the nearest airstrip of the lodge you are travelling to. A representative or ranger from your lodge will meet you at the airstrip and transfer you by game drive vehicle directly to your lodge.

FLIGHTS FROM JOHANNESBURG TO PHALABORWA AIRPORT/HOEDSPRUIT EASTGATE AIRPORT/KRUGER MPUMALANGA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KMI)
Several daily flights operate from Johannesburg to HDS or KMIA/MQP in the Kruger Surrounds and Panorama Route area. There is one flight daily from Cape Town direct to either HDS or KMIA/MQP. From the airports you can be transferred either by escorted road transfer (2/3 hours each way) or by charter flight (approx 25mins). If you are staying in the Sabi Sand Region, the most suitable airport would be KMIA/MQP and if you are staying further north, for example in the Timbavati Game Reserve, then HDS is the best option.

DAILY PRIVATE SCHEDULED FLIGHTS TO KRUGER PARK
• From Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport to Phalaborwa, Hoedspruit or KMIA;
• From Durban or Cape Town to KMIA only;
• From Durban and Cape Town to Johannesburg and then onwards to Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa

Passport, visa and other entry requirements

Passports

Please note that anyone travelling to Southern Africa must have two consecutive blank pages in their passport which lie side by side when the passport is open (i.e. a left and a right-hand page). Passengers travelling to Southern Africa with passports which do not comply with these requirements will either be stopped from boarding the aircraft or risk deportation on arrival in Southern Africa.

Visa’s

To enter South Africa, a passport valid for at least 30 days after the intended date of departure is required by all nationals. Passports must have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Our recommendation is to ensure you have three or even four blank pages if you are traveling through more than one country. If there are insufficient pages, entry could be denied. See country specific VISA requirements here.
