Activities

Delightful safari experiences at Makweti are assured by an astounding diversity of wild species, including the “Big Five”; by natural densities of wildlife; and by superbly qualified guides.

Makweti’s guides are, moreover, mature experts, proven in their dedication to introducing you to our wildlife, ecology, and the African folk-wisdom imbued in our environment.

While most of our safaris are conducted in an open vehicle, walking safaris can be tailored, on request, to your special wildlife or ecological interests. All bush walks would be by prior arrangement and are subject to availability.

Vital to any true safari experience is a certain quality of stillness. Wild animals follow their own sense of time and space, and the greater your personal sense of stillness – or peace, or well-being – the more you will experience. In making your stay comfortable, secure and exclusive, Makweti aims to maximize both your inner peace and the pleasure of your safari.

“A perfect balance of Nature and Nurture”

We spent 5 nights at Makweti Safari Lodge, looked after in idyllic comfort and style while in intense proximity to wild Africa. I’ve visited other game reserves, in South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya, but none of them have offered this intimate immersion, or provided the depth of knowledge, information and sheer fascination that we experienced from our incomparable game guide. Over ten game drives (dawn and dusk each day, each lasting about 3 hours) we learned about tracks, animal noises, birdcalls and kills, while learning absolutely stillness as rhino, elephant, lion and cheetah passed within feet. Morning coffee and sundowners in the bush, five-star breakfast and lunch and long conversation at the bar, topped every night by the gourmet dinner… I cannot really recommend the experience highly enough.

“Return Stay just as Excellent”

We have been to the Reserve 4 times and it never fails to impress. This was our second stay at Makweti and it was just as excellent as the first.
Great game viewing, food excellent, staff attentive and professional. What more would you want. Up close encounter with mother cheetah and her 3 cubs, tracking and finding the Thembe Male Lion, just amazing. Great birding and even just sitting on the Indaba deck watching the waterhole expectantly provides you with a true bush experience.

“Everything you hoped it would be...”

Our stay at Makweti ranks among the best experiences we ever had on vacation. The place is gorgeous and intimate and the location very convenient by small plane or a 2.5 hour drive from JoBerg. The staff was really attentive, capable and very willing to help make your stay perfect. Between the safari trips and the food one finds it easy to imagine that you can stay forever! Our guide Ellerd was clearly the best in the reserve and the whole team worked so well together to maximize our opportunities to see all that the reserve holds in store. We saw amazing animals and birds and met amazing people on the trip. I loved the whole experience and would definitely go back again and again!

“Beauty and service”

I was priviledged to spend an unexpected night at Makweti. What a wonderful experience. It was my first trip to the Welgevonden and I did not know what to expect but it passed all my expectations. The lodge is beautiful, I loved the fact that the surrounds are natural. My room was luxurious with a wonderful view of the bush. I just loved the Indaba deck where the game viewing was amazing. The service was sublime.
Everyone could not have been nicer and helpful. Every need is catered for. Would I return? At the drop of a hat. Thanks to everyone.
