What Animals Can You See in Kruger National Park? Complete Wildlife Guide

Kruger National Park is home to more mammal species than any other African game reserve — 147 species in total. This includes all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), plus cheetah, wild dog, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, and more than 100 additional mammal species. Over 500 bird species have been recorded. Kruger is widely regarded as Africa’s premier Big Five destination for self-drive safaris.

The Big Five in Kruger

Lion

Kruger holds approximately 1,600–2,000 lions — one of the largest wild lion populations in Africa. The highest lion density is in central Kruger, particularly around Satara rest camp and the N’wanetsi area. Lions are seen daily in the dry season from May to September.

Leopard

Kruger’s leopard population is estimated at 1,000+, though their secretive nature means sightings are less predictable. Southern Kruger near the Sabie River — particularly the stretch between Skukuza and Lower Sabie — consistently produces the best leopard sightings. Dawn and dusk drives yield the highest probability.

Elephant

Kruger’s elephant population stands at approximately 17,000–20,000 — the largest in any national park in the world. Elephants are seen daily in all areas of the park. In the dry season, herds of hundreds gather at the Letaba and Olifants rivers. No other African destination offers such reliable, large elephant herd sightings in a self-drive setting.

Rhino

Kruger holds one of Africa’s largest remaining white rhino populations — approximately 5,000–6,000 animals. Black rhino are rarer (~350 individuals) but present. Southern Kruger near Pretoriuskop, Berg-en-Dal, and the southern bush camps offers the best rhino sightings.

Buffalo

An estimated 37,000+ buffalo live in Kruger — the highest density in South Africa. Large herds of several hundred animals are common at waterholes and along river systems throughout the park. Buffalo are arguably Kruger’s most reliable Big Five sighting.

Other Exceptional Wildlife in Kruger

Cheetah

Approximately 200 cheetah in Kruger. Open grasslands of central Kruger — between Satara, Orpen, and Tshokwane — offer the best cheetah sightings in South Africa. Sightings are less guaranteed than lion but occur regularly.

Wild Dog (African Painted Dog)

Kruger holds approximately 350–400 wild dogs — one of the largest populations in Southern Africa. These endangered predators roam large territories and are unpredictable, but northern and central Kruger between Phalaborwa and Shingwedzi is their stronghold. Sightings at a den (June–August denning season) are spectacular.

Hippo and Crocodile

The Olifants, Sabie, Luvuvhu, and Crocodile rivers teem with hippo and Nile crocodile. The Sunset Dam near Lower Sabie consistently holds 30+ hippos visible from the road — one of Africa’s most accessible hippo viewing spots.

Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest

All three species are abundant throughout Kruger and seen daily. Giraffe (approximately 5,000) are particularly photogenic against Kruger’s thornveld backdrop. Zebra and wildebeest congregate in large herds on the central plains around Satara.

Rare Species to Look For

• Sable antelope: Rare in Kruger; Pretoriuskop area is best
• Roan antelope: Very rare; far northern sections
• Tsessebe: Small population in central Kruger
• Pangolin: Nocturnal and extremely rare — a bucket-list sighting
• Honey badger: Nocturnal; occasionally seen at night drives from private reserves
